PRESS RELEASE: DA Ivan Meyer lies on Toll issue
The position of the ANC in Council was that we wanted further negotiations on the toll road issues, not running to court with wasting of millions of Rands as the first option, so we opposed the court case.
We as the ANC and Cosatu both are unhappy about toll roads and COSATU will be launching a campaign against it. The DA has already spent more money on legal matters since they came to office that could build 300 houses, not surprising because many of the lawyers they use are there friends; this wastage must stop.
That comments in relation to the City discussion on the court case is neither here nor there though.
The real issues of difference between the DA and COSATU are in the funding model, as that essentially is what toll roads are about. This is in addition to the levy form fuel.
The DA wants roads to be funded from the fiscus, but with money being taken away from education or health, as there members and supporters mainly use private services in these areas. They are happy to privatise health and education in some form, but not roads, how ironic.
COSATU also believes that money should come from the fiscus for this roads and infrastructure, but we don't want money taken form education or health, as these services are already underfunded in relation to the semi private services of the DA members. We want the super wealthy to be taxed more, to pay for roads and other infrastructure. These super rich are however mainly DA members, or the people who fund the DA elections, so the DA don't want them taxed more.
That is the fundamental difference on toll roads between the DA and COSATU in Western Cape
