PRESS RELEASE: Minister Xingwana's decorating costs
The United Democratic Women’s Organisation (UDEMWO) has noted that Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana, has allegedly splurged R2.1 million of state funds decorating her head office.
From UDEMWO’s point of view, where there is smoke there might be fire. If it is true that Minister Xingwana had her department’s offices decorated using millions of taxpayers’ Rands, or even let it happen on her watch, it shows where her priorities lie.
At the moment, the issues of domestic abuse, rape and murder of women have come to the fore with what happened to Ms Anene Booysen and Ms Reeva Steenkamp. Minister Xingwana is either mum on these issues or reacts too late. When will she start being proactive? The tragedy of the aforementioned cases is that the Nation, and the Minister, only sits up and notices when extreme or prominent cases hit the media.
It is Minister Xingwana’s responsibility to keep the plight of women, children and people with disabilities issues fresh in our minds. She is supposed to be their champion. She should be the one who speaks for those who are far too often silenced by brutal circumstances and she should fight on their behalf.
But maybe Minister Xingwana is taking her cue from others who have their priorities skewed towards frivolity and unnecessary expense?
