PRESS RELEASE: Youth wage subsidy now
The United Democratic Movement Youth Vanguard (UDMYV) welcomes the ruling party’s show of will to speedily implement the youth wage subsidy.
President Jacob Zuma announced the R5 billion subsidy in Parliament in February 2010 and it does raise some question about why African National Congress-led Government announced this plan if the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is in such vehement opposition to it. Just think how many young South Africans would have been employed if Government implemented this subsidy already in 2010?
We also call on Cosatu to see the big picture; jobs must be created for young people. Concerns that this plan will displace older workers and is subject to abuse, can be mitigated by having systems in place that governs the spending of the funds and placing conditions on the receipt of any such subsidies.
The UDMYV hopes that the ruling party and its government will put their money where their mouths are and implement this subsidy as soon as possible.
