PRESS RELEASE: Institutionalised corruption at the centre of Eskom
The United Democratic Movement calls on all South Africans to resist Eskom's application to raise electricity prices by 16 per cent per year over the next five years. This is because the ruling party's stake in the Eskom/Hitachi/Chancellor House deal means that every time Eskom increases the electricity prices a certain percentage benefits the ruling party directly.
In addition, Eskom's exorbitant proposed tariff hikes, which are 10.4 per cent above the current inflation rate, are intended to cover the costs of the African National Congress's (ANC's) 2012 Mangaung Conference, among others.
We must reject this institutionalised corruption by mobilising against Eskom's proposed tariff increases in its current form.
