PRESS RELEASE: KwaMasiza Flats - human degradation
The Emfuleni municipal council has been neglecting the people of KwaMasiza Flats (Sebokeng, Gauteng) to the point where the filth and squalor these people live in, and have been for years, is criminal.
The building has not had electricity for around ten years. Water is supplied to the ground floor and all residents have to fetch water from their ground floor neighbours. Desperate people are forced to relieve themselves where they find a private spot because there is no water to flush toilets.
Sewerage is everywhere, open ditches are everywhere. The community crèche was closed and a construction company now occupies the premises. This situation is not only dangerous; it is dehumanising, immoral and criminal.
Complaining does not help with municipal officials and African National Congress councillors turning a deaf ear. Councillor Mthuzumele Skhukhula, who is responsible for the ward where KwaMasiza Flats are situated, is uncooperative and avoids contact with community leaders. The community was hopeful when they had secured a meeting with the mayor, which was cancelled without even the courtesy of informing them. Since then nobody from the municipality or council has been willing to assist them.
We call on the Mayor Hlongwane to step up to the plate and meet with the people of KwaMasiza Flats to sort out this atrocious situation. Live up to your stated mission to provide responsive, effective, efficient, and sustainable municipal services in an accountable manner.
