PRESS RELEASE: Condolences with the passing of Zwelakhe Sisulu
It is with great sadness in our hearts that we have learned of Zwelakhe Sisulu’s passing.
Zwelakhe and I got to know each other very well, when he was the editor of the New Nation newspaper, during the early 90’s. We worked closely together in an effort to systematically reveal the corrupt and immoral nature of Apartheid and the government that propagated it.
Our collaboration reached a climax when I was contacted by a certain officer of the South African Defence Force (SADF) who said that he had proof of the existence of a third force and wished to show this evidence to Mr Nelson Mandela, who was then President of the African National Congress (ANC) at the time. He alleged that Mr FW De Klerk was part of the Security Council that took the decision to destabilise black communities.
I was able to secure a meeting between Mr Mandela and the SADF officer where he was asked to hand over to me the proof for safekeeping. Amongst those documents was the infamous “Goniwe Signal” which was the order to kill United Democratic Front activist Matthew Goniwe and others.
Mr Mandela instructed Zwelakhe, the late Sipho Seepe, Enoch Sithole and I to work through those files and periodically reveal the information contained therein to expose the National Party government for what it was. This information strengthened the ANC’s hand during the negotiations.
Zwelakhe Sisulu was a gentle and unassuming man who had the ability to focus on the important things. I he will be dearly missed – bon voyage my friend.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you during and after this bereavement.
May his soul rest in peace
