PRESS RELEASE: UDM calls for Urgent Solution to Strike Action
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) expresses its concern regarding the sustained pressure for Unions to go on strike for better wages and conditions in the Gold Mining Industry. It is crucial that workers' demands are not ignored during the negotiations at the bargaining council. The mining sector essentially controls the largest labor force and the economy in South Africa.
It is unfortunate that the Unions have to always embark on a strike before any positive action is taken by the management. Prolonged discontent following settlements damages the reputation of the Mining Industry and chases away potential investors.
The UDM reiterates its call that all stakeholders take negotiations seriously and avert a negative industrial action outcome. It is imperative that we find solutions around the table that are amicable and non-violent.
