PRESS RELEASE: UDM calls for peace and reason to prevail in mining industry
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) calls on the mining sector to end the verbosity and give meaningful solutions to wage talks.
The UDM notes The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu)'s criticism to the central bargaining forums. In particular, the UDM concurs that not all mines operate at the same level of productivity and profitability.
The UDM further condemns the unacceptable comments made by the ANC's Buti Makhongela describing Amcu members as cockroaches which must be sprayed or doomed out of existence. With the mining industry having recorded 50 deaths in the last year, this incitement to violence must be regarded with the utmost contempt for peace.
The UDM further calls for reason to prevail, and call on all employers to take Amcu seriously, and put a reasonable offer on the table.
