The United Democratic Movement (UDM) welcomes the South African Cabinet approval of a proposal to have a once-off sale of rhino horn stockpile.
The hope is that this will reduce the black market demand. At present there is 16 437kg of rhino horn in the government stockpile, with an estimated street value of R11 billion.
We urge Government to channel this revenue to conservation and community programmes related to rhino conservation.
The UDM awaits the next step in the proposed sale, which is to present the proposal for approval at the next Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, which South Africa will host in 2016. Hopefully this is not too little too late.
